BIG BEN

BIG BEN
Location: Westminster SW1A 0AA
OK, so I know the photo isn't of the actual Big Ben (the actual Big Ben is currently covered in scaffolding with only one clock face visible so doesn't make for a great photo) but look at this - it is built from LEGO! (We spotted this in the LEGO store in Leicester Square, where there are also lots of other London related LEGO constructions. You can read more about the LEGO Store below...) The scaffolding is due to remain on Big Ben until 2021. The tower of Big Ben was originally called the clock tower but was renamed the Elizabeth Tower in 2012 to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth ll. It is not quite clear as to where the nickname Big Ben originated - The tower has 5 bells and the biggest of these bells is known as Big Ben, although people refer to the whole tower as Big Ben. It was a tradition to christen bells before they began to toll and it is believed that the bell is either named after Sir Benjamin Hall who oversaw the installation of this bell or heavyweight boxing champion, Benjamin Caunt.
