EAST YORKSHIRE BEACHES - MAPPLETON

MAPPLETON
Dog Policy: Dogs Allowed
Mappleton is a long sandy beach which is great for lengthy walks and it is also a great fossil-hunting spot. The fossils can be found in the clay boulders along the beach and loose in the pebbles. We have found quite a few ammonites, some of them with a metallic sheen to them. We have also found several Crinoids, Belemnites and Devil's toenails. If you are not sure what to look for with the fossils, a book that we have found most useful is the book Fossils Of The Whitby Coast . It has lots of pictures in it so it helps with easy identification.
You get to the beach by going down the quite steep slipway. There is beach to the right and to the left of the slipway. There is a sign that tells you to be aware that on the beach to the right that you might come across unexploded devices and to not touch them. (these are relics from WW2 when the cliffs at Mappleton were used as a practice bombing target). We have been to Mappleton on numerous occasions (and we always go right) we have come across things a couple of times - normally fragments of the blue shells that were used.
Do be aware that the tide can come in very quickly on this beach, cutting off the access / exit from the beach. If you are in need of refreshment or need provisions for a beach picnic, The Old Post Office Tea Rooms on the road to the beach, are dog friendly and offer a good selection of cakes, ice-cream, food (very tasty sausage rolls) and dog treats.
Useful Information: There is a free car park just by the access to the beach with toilets.
